High Precision LCD Panel Assembly Machine
High Precision LCD Panel Assembly Machine

This machine is used for backlight LCD module assembly. The main requirements are high speed and high precision. The machine has two XY tables, two Z-axes and one 2m-long axis with two carriages.

The customer had been using ball screws for the XY tables (two short stroke axes). To overcome backlash, large friction and mechanical vibration produced by the ball screw mechanism, the customer has decided to switch to PBA Systems DX B Ironless Linear Motors which are able to produce faster and more precise motion compared to ball screws and is more cost-saving since ball screws will need to be replaced regularly due to wear and tear.

The 2m long axis uses two carriages. For this axis, the customer cannot use ball screw, which can only have one carriage, whereas multiple carriages can run on one linear motor magnet track. Another reason why ball screw is not suitable for the 2m-long axis is because the ball screw shaft will deform under gravity for such a long axis. The ball screw mechanisms can’t achieve high acceleration, because of large friction and mechanical vibration. The customer has decided to use PBA Systems DX B series Ironless linear motor for overcome the above problems.

PBA Systems DX B Linear Motors have met the customers’ high speed and high precision requirements and the machine is now used to produce a highly popular American branded tablet.

Earlier Configuration Current Configuration
  • Ball screws + Rotary servo motor
  • PLC – Mitsubishi PLC
  • PBA Systems Ironless Linear Motor Module DX30B-C2S (XY Tables and 2m-long axis)

  • Encoder – Renishaw RH200, 0.5 um
  • PLC – Mitsubishi PLC
Die Mapping Sorter Machine

IC Mapping Sorter with DX B Linear MOtor

The customer wanted to achieve high speed and high precision for a die mapping and sorting machine. The machine has one 1080mm axis with 3 carriages. The first carriage is used to convey the wafer (the die on the wafer) to the inspection area, the second carriage checks the die, while the third carriage moves the die after checking.

Other features of this machine are:

  • Input carrier : 8” frame
  • Auto tape in, Auto tray out
  • Auto wafer expansion
  • Output tray size 2”,3”,4
  • Three output bins
  • Placement inspection in real time
  • A.O.I. function
  • Double chip, contamination, scratch, back side chipping

For the 1080mm axis, the customer had been using an Akribis linear motor. The Akribis linear motor was unable to achieve high speed (high acceleration, low settling time, low cycle time), so the customer decided to switch to PBA systems DX B series Ironless linear motor to overcome these problems.

PBA Systems Linear Motors have met all customer requirements and the machine is now used for production.

Wire Bonder Machine

Wire Bonder
Wire bonder machines have very high force and high acceleration demands. Ball-screw mechanisms can’t achieve such high speed (high acceleration, low settling time, low cycle time) because of backlash, large friction and mechanical vibration. This machine has one 180mm long axis that requires very high acceleration (8G) and very low dwell time. This axis also requires good heat dissipation in order to protect the motor from overheating. The customer has decided to use PBA systems DX B series Ironless linear motor with air-cooling feature to meet the requirements. With air cooling option, the linear motor’s continuous force has increased by more than 20%.

PBA Systems Linear Motors have met all customer requirements and the machine is now used for production.

Heavy Sliding Door Mechanism

DX B Linear Motor

This application involves opening and closing a pair of heavy sliding doors in a security area. There are two linear motor axes that move in opposite directions, each with a payload mass of approximately 9000kg. The maximum velocity requirement is 500mm/sec.

Due to motor performance and servicing issues with the previous set up, the customer has decided to use DX B series Ironless linear motor and were convinced of the superior motor quality and better technical support and service.

Industrial Fabric Printer

DX B Linear Motor

The Industrial fabric printer consists of a 4.5 m stroke axis with a large 50kg print head.

The two main challenges for such a printer are:

  • High speed for higher throughput or fast printing speed
  • Low dynamic position error to make sure that the ink contacts the fabric at correct position
  • Smooth motion to prevent printing artifacts on the fabric caused by jerking

In previous machines, the customer used ball screw linear actuators for this axis. Limited by the ball screw, the customer was unable to increase throughput by increasing speed while maintaining a smooth motion. So instead, they used PBA Systems DX B Ironless linear motor in a customized sub-module solution. A long customized actuator was provided by PBA Systems and the customer simply had to bolt it onto the machine.

The direct drive linear motor achieves the specified 1.5m/s speed at 0.8G while maintaining smooth motion. PBA Systems has also delivered mechanically by achieving accuracy of within 50 microns which has been verified through a laser interferometer test.

This mechanical sub-module has shortened the project development time for the customer, thus reducing overhead costs. Maintenance will be further reduced since there are no screws or rubbing mechanical components that may suffer from wear.

With PBA System’s expertise in building precision sub-modules, the customer had a better quality product while saving on costs.
