Case Studies
Film on Glass (FOG) Machine – Flat Panel
This machine bods film onto glass substrate. There are 3 XY tables and one 4m-long axis on this machine. For the XY table (two short stroke axes), the customer had been using ball-screw. The ball-screw mechanism can’t achieve high precision (high accuracy, high repeatability) because of backlash and mechanical vibration. Furthermore, ball screws need replacement every few months due to wear and tear. It is extra maintenance cost. So the customer wanted to switch to PBA Systems DX B Ironless Linear Motor.

The 4m-long axis uses 3 carriages. For this axis, the customer cannot use ball-screw, which can only use one carriage, whereas multiple carriages can run on one linear motor magnet track. Another reason why ball-screw is not suitable for the 4m-long axis is because the balls-screw shaft will deform under gravity for such a long axis. PBA Systems DX B Series Ironless Linear Motors easily overcome the above problems.

Earlier Configuration Current Configuration
  • Ball-screw + rotary servo motor
  • PLC control system
  • PBA Systems Ironless Linear Motor Module
    DX30B-C2S (X,Y and 4m long axis)
  • Driver – Elmo COR 5/230
  • Encoder – Renishaw RH200, 0.5 um resolution
  • PLC – Mitsubishi PLC

PBA Systems Linear Motors have met all customer requirements and the machine is now used to produce a famous Japanese brand LCD panel.

High Accuracy Laser Scriber Machine for Wafer Cutting
This machine uses laser beam to cut metal coated 6-inch wafer. The machine has one XY stage and one Z axis. Z axis uses rotary servo motor to focus the lens. The customer requires high accuracy and low velocity ripple, and, vibration-free motion on this XY stage. The customer decided to use PBA Systems DX B Series Ironless Linear Motor for the X and Y axis as a cost effective solution to meet their requirements. Ball-screw can not achieve high accuracy motion because of backlash and mechanical vibration. PBA Systems DX B ironless linear motor was selected for its high accuracy, low speed ripple and competitive price.

Current Configuration
  • PBA Systems Ironless Linear Motor Module
    DX30B-C3S (XY Stage)
  • Driver – Elmo COR 5/230
  • Encoder – Renishaw Tonic, 0.1u resolution
  • Controller – Pulse and Direction card

PBA Systems Linear Motors have met the customer requirements and the machine is currently used for production.

High Frequency Camera Focus System
The customers’ machine uses camera to focus on very tiny objects. The motion of this camera unit is point-to-point, high frequency (high acceleration and low dwell time) and short stroke. Other requirements on the actuator are small size and low settling time. The customer had been using ball-screw. But the ball-screw mechanism can’t achieve high frequency and low settling time because of backlash, mechanical vibration, and high friction. Furthermore, ball-screw requires replacement every few months due to wear and tear. It is extra maintenance cost. Customer decided to use PBA Systems CVCA Series Voice Coil Actuators to overcome the ball-screw drawbacks. CVCA50-30 is used for this application. It is more cost-effective compared to a linear motor solution.

Earlier Configuration Current Configuration
  • Ball-screw + rotary servo motor
  • PLC control system
  • PBA Systems CVCA Actuator
    CVCA 50-30
  • Driver – Elmo HAR 8/100
  • Encoder – MicroE 1500 ,1.0 um resolution
  • PLC – Omron

Having met the customers’ requirements, PBA Systems voice coil actuators are now being used in the production of a world-famous mobile phone brand.

Benchtop Dip-Coating Machine
The existing wafer dip coating machine uses a ballscrew actuator for the Z-Axis. Due to the friction of the ball screw, there are velocity ripples that creates periodic lines on the coating. PBA Systems created a full benchtop single axis machine for this purpose using the DX20B-C3S Ironless Linear Motor which has far less friction. It uses a servodrive with a regulated 48V DC power supply to ensure low noise levels in the DC bus Voltage.

PBA Systems created a cost effective full solution that includes the software, motion control card, servodrive and full mechanical assembly for the particular silicon wafer to be coated. Using direct drive technology, PBA Systems offered a high performance alternative to off-the-shelf lab machine. Not only will the direct drive motors increase performance of the system, the source code provided enables the customer to expand the functionality of the machine for research or production.

Current Configuration
  • PBA Systems Ironless Linear Motor Module
    DX20B-C3S (Z-Axis)
  • Driver – Elmo Harmonica 8/60
  • Encoder – Renishaw RGH41 1um resolution
  • Controller – Aurotek MC8841P
